Urea is the least glamorous ingredient on this list and the one most likely to actually fix the thing you are annoyed about. It does two jobs at once, and the second one is the reason it beats an ordinary moisturiser on rough skin.
What does urea actually do to skin?
The first job is holding water. Urea is a humectant — it pulls water into the upper layer of the skin and keeps it there. Your skin already makes its own, as part of what dermatology calls the natural moisturising factor, and skin that is chronically dry tends to have less of it.
The second job is the one that matters for texture. Above roughly 10%, urea starts breaking the bonds holding dead cells together on the surface. That is what a keratolytic does, and it is why urea smooths bumpy skin while a rich body butter only makes it feel temporarily softer. The bumps on the backs of your arms are plugs of keratin sitting in follicle openings. Coating them changes nothing. Loosening them does.
Which strength should I actually buy?
For most people the answer is 10%, and buying stronger is not better.
At 10% you get enough keratolytic action to change texture over a few weeks without much stinging, which matters because the failure mode of the higher strengths is that people stop using them. Consistency over six weeks beats intensity over four days, every time.
Go to 20% when the skin is genuinely thickened — the rough patch on an elbow that has been there for years, hard skin on the outside of a heel. Above that, 40% is a debriding strength meant for calluses and thickened nails, not for spreading over an arm.
Does urea work on keratosis pilaris?
It is one of the two things that reliably help, alongside lactic acid. It does not cure it — nothing does, because the tendency to plug follicles with keratin is inherited — but daily use visibly smooths the texture within four to eight weeks. Stop, and the roughness comes back over the following month or two. That is not the product failing. That is what management means.
The redness underneath is a separate problem and urea does very little for it. If the bumps are gone but the arm still looks pink, you have hit the limit of what this ingredient does.
How to use it without wasting it
Two minutes out of the shower, on skin still damp. That is the entire technique and it is worth more than moving up a strength.
Urea is a humectant, which means it works by holding water — so it needs water present. Applied to skin that dried off twenty minutes ago in a heated room, it is a moisturiser with an active in it and not much more. Applied while the surface is still wet, it traps that water where the roughness is.
Once daily is enough for most people at 10%. Twice is better on shins in winter. Frequency matters far more than quantity: a thin layer daily beats a thick layer twice a week, because what you are managing is a continuous process of cells plugging follicles, not a one-off blockage.
If you are using it on the backs of your arms, do both arms every time, even if one is worse. Treating only the bad side leaves you comparing an arm you treated against an arm you did not, six weeks apart, from memory — which is not a comparison at all. Photograph one arm at the start instead.
Urea, or one of the acids?
The honest ranking for rough body skin is that urea and lactic acid are roughly equivalent for most people, and which one suits you is not predictable in advance.
Urea tends to win when the skin is dry as well as rough, because it holds noticeably more water than it exfoliates. Lactic acid tends to win when the texture is the main complaint and dryness is secondary. Both take four weeks before you can judge them.
Salicylic acid is a different tool entirely — it is oil-soluble, so it goes into blocked follicles rather than working across the surface. If the bumps are inflamed or have visible blockage in them rather than being purely rough, that is the one to try.
Glycolic acid is stronger than any of these and the extra strength usually buys irritation on ordinary body skin. Reach for it when urea has failed for eight weeks, not before.
What to skip and why
Skip the scrub you were about to buy to use alongside it. Physical exfoliation on keratosis pilaris or dry, bumpy skin inflames the surface and leaves the plugs where they are. Urea is doing the same job chemically, without the friction.
Skip applying it to dry skin. A humectant with no water available to hold is working with one hand. Two minutes out of the shower, skin still damp, is the whole trick.
Skip stacking it with three other actives. The most common reason people conclude a routine failed is that they changed four things in a week and cannot tell which one caused what. One active, one variable, six weeks.

- 2–5%
- Ordinary body lotion territory. Adds water-holding to a moisturiser, but too weak to do anything to texture on its own.
- 10%
- The everyday working strength for keratosis pilaris arms and thighs, and for dry, rough shins. Smooths without stinging on most skin.
- 20%
- Thickened, stubborn patches and rough heels. Noticeably more keratolytic — it is actively dissolving the surface, so it can sting on broken skin.
- 40%
- Calluses and thickened nails. This is a debriding strength; it is not something to apply over a large area of ordinary body skin.
Leave it alone if: the skin is broken, weeping or freshly shaved — urea stings badly on an open surface, and the higher strengths sting most. Wait until it has closed.

- Is urea the same as urea in fertiliser?
- It is the same molecule, but the material used in skin products is synthesised to pharmaceutical purity and formulated at a controlled concentration. Urea also occurs naturally in your own skin as part of its water-holding system, which is why it is tolerated so well.
- Does urea exfoliate or moisturise?
- Both, and the concentration decides which dominates. At low strengths it mostly holds water in the skin. From about 10% upward it also loosens the bonds between dead surface cells, which is what actually smooths rough texture rather than just coating it.
- Can I use urea and lactic acid together?
- You can, and many products combine them, but there is little reason to layer two separate products. If one is not working after eight weeks of consistent use, switching is more useful than stacking — stacking mostly increases the chance of irritation.

- Shaving leaves microscopic breaks in the surface, and urea at working strengths is mildly keratolytic — it acts on an open surface. Leave a day between shaving and applying it, or apply it to unshaved areas only.
