Lactic acid

The short version

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that loosens dead surface cells while also holding water in the skin, so it exfoliates without leaving the skin as dry as glycolic acid does. Twelve percent is the working strength for rough arms and legs, used nightly on damp skin. Texture improves in three to four weeks.

Lactic acid is the one to reach for when your skin is both rough and dry, which on a body is most of the time. It is the alpha hydroxy acid that does not leave you parched afterwards.

What makes lactic acid different from other acids?

It does two things where most exfoliating acids do one. Like every AHA it loosens the bonds between dead cells at the surface so they shed instead of piling up. Unlike glycolic acid, it is also a humectant — it holds water in the skin while it works.

That second property is why it suits body skin. The skin on your arms, thighs and back is thicker than facial skin, tends to be drier, and gets washed with whatever is in the shower. An exfoliant that also puts water back is a better fit than one that only strips.

The molecule is also larger than glycolic acid’s, so it penetrates more slowly. On a face that can be a limitation. On a shin in February it is the point.

What strength do I need?

Twelve percent, applied nightly to skin still damp from the shower. That is the answer for rough arms, bumpy thighs and dry, flaky shins.

Below 10% you are mostly buying a nice body lotion. It will feel good and it will not change the texture much. Above 12% the stinging goes up faster than the results do, and the failure mode of a stinging product is that the bottle ends up at the back of a cupboard in week three.

How long before it works?

Three to four weeks before the texture is noticeably smoother, and about eight weeks before you have seen everything it is going to do. Judge it at eight weeks, not at eight days.

If nothing has changed by then, the honest conclusion is that this is not the right active for your skin — switch to urea rather than going up a strength.

Does it help with ingrown hairs and razor bumps?

Yes, as prevention, and it is worth understanding why so you do not expect the wrong thing from it.

An ingrown hair happens when the follicle opening is sealed over by dead skin, so the hair — especially a curly one — grows into the follicle wall instead of out through the surface. Anything that keeps that opening clear reduces how often it happens.

Lactic acid does that across the whole surface, gently enough to use on a bikini line or a beard area most days. What it will not do is release a hair that is already trapped. That needs warmth, patience and leaving the bump alone — the full protocol is on ingrown hair.

Salicylic acid does the same preventive job slightly better, because being oil-soluble it works inside the follicle rather than across the top of it. Lactic acid is the better choice when the surrounding skin is also dry, which on legs and bikini lines it very often is.

The timing rule matters here more than anywhere: not on the day you shave or wax. Freshly shaved skin has microscopic breaks in it, and an acid on an open surface is the stinging, red result people blame on the razor.

What a build-up schedule actually looks like

Most irritation comes from starting at daily. A schedule that works:

  • Week 1–2: every third night, on damp skin, one area only.
  • Week 3–4: alternate nights, if there has been no lasting redness.
  • Week 5 onward: nightly, if it is comfortable. Many people stay on alternate nights indefinitely and get the same result.

If you get lasting redness or stinging that outlasts a few minutes, drop back a step for two weeks rather than stopping entirely. Stopping and restarting from scratch is how people spend six months making no progress.

What to skip and why

Skip using it the same night as a retinoid on the same patch of skin. Both act on the surface, and together they take a manageable amount of irritation and make it unmanageable. Alternate nights if you want both.

Skip the loofah. Chemical and physical exfoliation stacked on the same skin is how people end up with a shoulder that is smooth, red and sore. Pick one.

Skip it on freshly shaved skin. Give it a day. The sting on a fresh shave is telling you something true.

Found in body lotions sold as "smoothing". Mild enough for nightly use on sensitive skin, slow enough that you need patience.

The strength that actually changes rough texture on arms and thighs. This is what to look for on a keratosis pilaris lotion.

For thickened or very rough skin, and for people who have used 12% for months without irritation. More stinging, not proportionally more benefit.

Leave it alone if: you have active eczema, sunburn or broken skin in the area, or you are using a prescription retinoid on the same patch — the combination is a reliable route to a raw, stinging mess.

Lactic acid for most people. Its molecule is larger than glycolic acid, so it penetrates less aggressively and holds water while it works, which leaves the skin less dry afterwards. Glycolic acid is the stronger resurfacer, and on body skin that extra strength usually buys irritation rather than results.
Can I use lactic acid on my face and body?
Yes, but not at the same strength. Body skin is thicker and slower to respond than facial skin, which is why body lotions run at 10–12% where a facial product might be 5–8%. Using a body-strength product on your face is a common cause of the raw, tight feeling people mistake for it working.

On skin that is covered, not really. On arms, shoulders and shins in summer, yes — alpha hydroxy acids increase UV sensitivity, and that persists for about a week after you stop. This is the one situation where body SPF is genuinely worth the bother.
